ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair上海甘一当代艺术博览会

Since its inception in 2013, Art021 has witnessed exponential growth, expanding from 29 participants in its first edition to hosting 150 galleries representing 16 countries and territories this year. With over 100 exhibitors coming from 17 cities and regions across China, Art021 ambitiously bridges local and global artistic practices, reflecting the country's diverse contemporary art scene.

Art021 has become a central event for Shanghai, celebrated not just by the local art community but also by the international audience it attracts. Despite challenges caused by the pandemic, economic fluctuations, and global politics, the fair and the Shanghai art market seem to continue to flourish, now hosting more galleries, private institutions, and collectors than could have been imagined at its outset.

Art021 also coincides with other key art events in Shanghai, including the West Bund Art & Design fair and the 14th Shanghai Biennale, creating a vibrant cultural ecosystem. The increasing participation of younger collectors highlights a shifting demographic trend, emphasizing a growing interest and appreciation for contemporary art. This robust engagement from both local and international galleries, including newcomers and established names making their return since the pandemic, speaks to Art021's critical role in fostering connections within the global art community.

Info

For the 2024 edition, Art021’s Executive Committee is taking significant steps to refine the selection of participating galleries and artworks, with the goal of offering an unparalleled fair experience that stands out for its excellence. In addition, for this year, Art021 is also committed to achieving a better equilibrium between local and international galleries, ensuring a rich and diverse showcase that caters to varied tastes and interests. To this end, the requirements for gallery applications have become more stringent.
All applying galleries must possess a physical exhibition space and are required to regularly organize at least three exhibitions per year, emphasizing their commercial nature. Any individuals or entities solely engaged in art dealerships without a commitment to fostering art through exhibitions will not meet the application criteria. Additionally, applicants in categories such as jewelry and furniture must also have a physical display space to qualify.

In Magnus Resch’s newest book, How to Collect Art, he divided all the art fairs into three classifications:
            Alpha: 3 art fairs.
            Beta: 15 art fairs
            Gamma: 280 art fairs
Art 021 was classified as one of the Beta art fairs.
It is also the most important and influential art fair for contemporary art in mainland China.

In the main gallery unit, Gladstone Gallery has settled in ART021 for the first time, and international blue-chip galleries such as David Zwirner, Gagosian, White Cube, and Perrotin are still present; ShanghART Gallery, MadeIn Gallery, East Gallery, and Antenna Space , Vanguard, BANK Gallery and other local powerful galleries continue to take advantage of their home field. Galleries from Beijing, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Wuhan, and Hefei also provide diverse perspectives for the expo.

Auction houses also exhibites at Art021, such as Yongle auction, Ploy auction, and etc. Their exhibition is primarily for their next auction preview, so all the artworks are not selling at an art fair, but in some scenarios, auction houses at art fairs will offer private sales for specific clients.

ART021 has also be selected as an exhibition project of the China Shanghai International Art Festival for ten consecutive years. It is one of the initial units of the China Shanghai International Art Trading Month. It has been selected to be funded by the National Art Fund and the Jing'an District Cultural Development Special Funding Project. In 2022, ART021, as the co-organizer and executive unit of China Shanghai International Art Trading Week, will be more deeply involved in promoting the development of the art industry and public aesthetic education.
