INFO
Beijing Dangdai Art Fair is currently considered the premier contemporary art fair in Beijing. Despite its smaller scale compared to Shanghai or Hong Kong, Beijing, as China's capital, offers a unique and vibrant art ecosystem that is unmatched in the country. It boasts the most comprehensive range of art ecosystems, serving as a home to an extensive network of artists, galleries, art institutes, and a hub for both corporate and private collectors. This environment has gradually fostered its own contemporary art ecosystem.
Beijing not only has the highest number of collectors per capita in China but also features a diverse group of collectors, ranging from seasoned to younger enthusiasts. These collectors are characterized by their substantial purchasing power, a rich history of antique collection stretching back centuries, and a profound appreciation for the content of artworks over their format.
Although the Beijing Dangdai Art Fair typically hosts around 100 exhibitors per edition, a review of past participant lists reveals a strong preference for local galleries, underscoring the fair’s commitment to supporting the local art community. For instance, in the 2023 edition, 75 percent of the 84 Chinese galleries that participated were based in Beijing, highlighting the city's central role in nurturing and defining China's art landscape.
As the city with the highest number of auction houses in China, Beijing Dangdai Art Fair naturally attracts significant participation from major auction institutions such as Poly Auction, Yongle Auction, and Guardian Auction. With the spring auctions typically scheduled for July, these auction houses often choose to preview their spring auction items at the Beijing Dangdai Art Fair held at the end of May. This strategy not only enhances the fair’s offerings by including secondary market pieces but also provides the auction houses with an opportunity to showcase their upcoming lots to potential clients. This symbiotic relationship enriches the art fair's diversity, adding a layer of depth to the primary market exhibitions while facilitating greater visibility and engagement for the auction houses' spring collections.
