West Bund Art & Design 西岸艺术与设计博览会
West Bund Art & Design was founded in 2014. It has been dedicated to providing a platform for international and local galleries to showcase high-quality modern and contemporary artworks in Shanghai. With a diverse range of exhibitions and events at museums & galleries, West Bund Art & Design no doubt has enriched the art map of Shanghai and made the city a vital stop on the global art calendar.
The fair was initiated in 2014 at the West Bund Art Center, a space transformed from an aircraft manufacturing factory. It has since evolved from its modest beginnings with just over 30 galleries. Today, it stands as a cornerstone of Shanghai's West Bund district, an area now celebrated as a cultural hotspot in the city.
In last year's edition, the fair showcased an impressive lineup of 185 galleries from both domestic and international scenes. Notably, 54 of these galleries made their debut, highlighting the fair's growth and its role as a pivotal platform for new and established talents in the art world. Additionally, the fair also featured an equitable 50/50 split between local and international galleries, which marks a significant milestone in the fair's evolution and underscores its commitment to fostering a global dialogue within the art world. This equitable representation signifies the fair's dual focus: showcasing China's rich artistic talent while simultaneously embracing diverse perspectives from around the globe.

INFO
Furthermore, during the West Bund Art Fair, visitors also have the unique opportunity to explore nearby museums and galleries. Well-known institutions and galleries such as the West Bund Museum, Shanghai Center of Photography, ShanghART Gallery, East Gallery, AIKE, Qiao Space, Chi K11, Tank Shanghai, Arario Gallery, Long Museum, and the Star Museum all host exceptional exhibitions concurrently. This synergy not only enriches the cultural offerings available to art enthusiasts but also signifies the maturation and sophistication of Shanghai Art Week, marking its steady development into a fully-fledged and vibrant art event.
The West Bund Art Fair and Art021, two of the most important art fairs in mainland China, are scheduled just one day apart from each other. According to our research, approximately 30 galleries participate in both fairs each year. However, the majority of galleries tend to choose only one of the fairs. The decision to partake in either or both fairs reflects a strategic approach to maximizing exposure and engagement within Shanghai's vibrant art market.
At the 2023 West Bund Art Fair, seven blue-chip galleries — AIKE, Hauser & Wirth, Ota Fine Arts, Pace Gallery, ShanghART Gallery, WHITE SPACE, and White Cube — marked a decade of consistent participation, reinforcing their commitment to the fair. This enduring presence of leading galleries from both the global and local spectrums is a testament to the fair's significance as a premier platform for contemporary art in mainland China. For collectors, Shanghai Art Week emerges as the most opportune moment to engage with the primary market, offering unparalleled access to a wide range of artworks from emerging talents to established names in the art world. The sustained participation of these galleries not only enriches the fair's offerings but also signals Shanghai's growing importance in the global art market. It reflects the city's capability to attract and retain high-caliber art institutions, contributing to a dynamic cultural ecosystem where artists, galleries, and collectors converge.
Our surveys indicate a general preference among participants for the West Bund Art Fair over Art021, not only in terms of the quality of artworks brought by galleries but also regarding the spatial layout and arrangement. Furthermore, West Bund has been pushing beyond merely fostering commercial growth within the art fair industry. In recent years, there has been a concerted effort to deepen the exhibition's intellectual engagement, aiming to transform the West Bund Art Fair into more than just a marketplace for transactions.
